Not sure where to start? We’ve developed three proven itineraries for stopovers of different lengths. Just pick the one that suits you!
The golden rule of a stopover: Remember that all itineraries are based on ‘pure’ time in the city. Always return to the airport at least 3 hours before your flight.] It's better to have a coffee by the gate than to watch your plane fly off without you.
Route 1: A quick introduction to the future (4–6 hours)
Ideal if you want to experience Dubai's magic and snap those iconic photos with the Burj Khalifa in the background. This route is entirely focused on the heart of the modern city—the Downtown area.
- First 40 minutes: Journey to the center. Right from the terminal, hop onto the Red Line metro and head straight to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station.
- Next 2 hours: Meeting the giants. Your mission at Dubai Mall is to ignore the shops! Seek out the free wonders: the mesmerizing aquarium wall and the waterfall with "divers" leaping down. Then head outside to capture that perfect shot of the Burj Khalifa's spire.
- 1 hour for dinner and views. You can grab a quick and tasty bite at the mall's food court. Looking for romance? Choose a café with a terrace overlooking the lake.
- 30 minutes of magic. Take a seat in the front row—the Fountain Show is about to begin! You'll have time to watch 1–2 water and light performances (evening shows run every half hour starting at 6:00 PM).
- Final 50 minutes: Return trip. Take the same metro route back to the airport. Mission accomplished!

In just one day, you'll take a journey through time—from the aromatic markets of the old city to the dazzling splendor of the modern metropolis.
- First 20 minutes: A leap into the past. Grab a taxi at the airport and head straight to the historic Al Fahidi district.
- Next 2 hours: The Labyrinths of the Old City. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of old Dubai as you wander through narrow alleyways lined with wind towers. Peek into quiet courtyards and cool art galleries tucked away in restored historic buildings.
- 45 minutes for a water ride. Make your way to Dubai Creek and cross to the other side on a traditional wooden abra boat. This isn’t just transportation—it’s a real attraction that costs next to nothing yet delivers a wealth of unforgettable experiences.
- One and a half hours exploring Deira’s treasures. Prepare for a sensory overload! The Spice Souk greets you with spicy clouds of cardamom, saffron, and cinnamon. Just around the corner, the Gold Souk dazzles with its dazzling displays of glittering jewelry. Bargaining isn’t mandatory, but soaking up the atmosphere here is priceless.

Location guide: What lies behind the route’s stops
Here, we’ll provide detailed information about each location mentioned in the itineraries. Use this section as a building block to learn more about the places you plan to visit or to add something new to your itinerary.
The heart of modern Dubai: The Downtown district
Downtown is the place where your neck is guaranteed to ache from looking up. Here you’ll find the very essence of Dubai’s “wow” factor: the spire of Burj Khalifa, piercing the clouds; the colossal The Dubai Mall (inside which you could easily get lost for half a day); and the musical Fountains, dancing at the base of the skyscraper. Even if you only have a couple of hours, you’ll still have time to soak in this incredible scale.

The soul of the city: Old Dubai and the Creek
To see what Dubai was like before the oil boom, head to the Dubai Creek. In the historic Al Fahidi district, you’ll find yourself in a maze of sandy alleyways lined with restored houses that now house cozy cafés and galleries. Be sure to cross the creek on a traditional abra boat—a 5-minute ride costing just a few dirhams that will leave a lasting impression. On the other side, you’ll discover the bustling and fragrant spice and gold markets, where you can fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a true Eastern bazaar.

Top viewing spots: See it all
Dubai was made to be seen from above. In addition to Burj Khalifa, there are several other iconic vantage points. The Museum of the Future is an architectural masterpiece in its own right and a must-visit for photos. Dubai Frame, standing 150 meters tall, offers a unique concept: from it, you’ll see how the old city meets the new. Meanwhile, the The View at The Palm observation deck, located 240 meters above ground, provides an unforgettable panoramic view of the famous man-made Palm Jumeirah island.
Which observation deck should you choose if you only have time for one? Consider this: head to the Dubai Frame if you want to see a vivid depiction of the city’s history—old Dubai on one side and new Dubai on the other. Climb Burj Khalifa if your goal is to tick off “I’ve been at the top of the world” and experience its breathtaking scale. And if you’re drawn to the geometry of man-made wonders and seaside landscapes, then The View at The Palm is your choice.
Oases by the water: Dubai Marina, JBR, and the Beaches
If you have a longer layover, head to the coast. Dubai Marina is a district of needle-like skyscrapers built around an artificial canal, featuring a seven-kilometer promenade perfect for leisurely strolls. The neighboring district of JBR is famous for its The Walk waterfront promenade and a lively public beach with dozens of cafés. And if you want to take a classic photo with the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab hotel in the background, your choice is Kite Beach, a favorite among kitesurfers.

Visa and the airport: First steps
Dubai International Airport (DXB) is well-equipped to handle transit passengers who wish to explore the city. In the arrival areas of Terminals 1 and 3, there are luggage storage facilities where you can leave your carry-on luggage (from 40 AED for 12 hours) and explore the city with ease. There are also shower facilities available to help you freshen up after your flight.
Visa regulations: what you need to know: Good news: citizens of more than 100 countries (including Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Belarus) do not need a visa for a short stopover in Dubai—they will receive a free 90-day stamp directly at the airport. However, the world is changing, and visa regulations are the most tedious yet crucial part of your trip preparation. So do yourself a favor: before you fly, check the official website of Emirates or the UAE consulate to make sure that nothing has changed for you. Peace of mind is worth it.
From the airport to the city and back: A transportation guide
How do you get to the city? Your choice depends on the time of day and your budget:
- If you have a daytime layover and want to save money: Your best option is the metro. From Terminals 1 and 3, the Red Line will take you to the city center in 25–30 minutes for just 5–8 dirhams. It’s fast, cheap, and avoids traffic.
- If you have a nighttime layover, a lot of luggage, or simply value comfort: Don’t hesitate—take an official RTA taxi or book through Uber/Careem. This is a round-the-clock service and the fastest option (15–25 minutes to the city center), costing 50–70 dirhams. After a long flight, it’s well worth the extra expense.
- Buses: The cheapest option, but also the slowest. Not recommended for short layovers due to the complexity of navigation and long travel times.
Transportation prices are approximate; we recommend checking current fares on official websites.
Your key to the city – the NOL card: The first thing you should buy at the airport is a NOL transport card. It works on the metro, buses, and trams. It’s your ticket to a world of fast and affordable travel around Dubai.
Tips for the smart traveler
- Saving money: Purchase tickets for Burj Khalifa, the Museum of the Future, and other popular attractions online in advance to avoid queues and often get a better price. For an inexpensive and tasty meal, choose food courts in malls or small cafés in the old districts.
- Comfort: It gets extremely hot in Dubai during the summer (+40°C and above). Plan outdoor activities for the early morning or evening. In public places (malls, metro), dress modestly by covering your shoulders and knees. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport and in most shopping centers.
- Planning: Plan your itinerary in advance, grouping geographically close attractions (for example, Downtown or the Old Town). Use mobile apps for navigation (Google Maps) and for ordering taxis (Careem, Uber) to save precious time.
